Dear God,  Jenni Mickelson

…I’m Afraid

Dear God,

I’m afraid…Oh God, I don’t know what to do!

I like to feel comfortable. I like to feel assured that the world around me will function “ideally” and not cause me any real problems.

But it doesn’t function “ideally.” It does offer up problems. And when it does, it can leave me feeling confused, scared, terrified about my life and if it will ever look “right” again.

Hardship, pain, uncertainty — they’re real and they will come. But along with that fact comes another truth: that we have a mighty and loving God who has the power to relieve us of the fears and anxieties we can so often feel. Who can turn such things into channels to display his glory. Who alone knows how to help us when we are afraid…

…because he alone knows everything about us…

“‘Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered'” (Luke 12:7a).

…because he alone has control over everything…

“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!'” (Mark 4:39a)

…but our Triune God — our Creator, our Savior, and our Sustainer — won’t stop, either.

“‘But take heart! I have overcome the world'” (John 16:33b).

Fear, it wracks my body;
anxiety, it hurts.
Afraid am I of things to come,
of things both come and gone.

Sin’s demons move to ravage,
hell’s floodgates open wide;
but they will ne’er endure the day,
for my salvation’s come —

for you,
my comfort,
are King.
