Salvation by Deception

“I want every gun we have to fire on that man.”

Kylo Ren has tracked the survivors of the Resistance to Crait. They are seemingly trapped. “Supreme Leader” Kylo Ren and the First Order troops force them to retreat to their base which has only one way in and out. Kylo advances upon the base ready to wipe out the last remnants of the Resistance.

Suddenly, Luke Skywalker appears in front of the base. Kylo stares with hatred at his former master, and then he calmly gives the order. “I want every gun we have to fire on that man.”

Multiple AT-M6s open fire on Luke. “MORE!”
No one could survive this – not even the most powerful Jedi.
General Hux sarcastically asks Kylo, “Do you think you got him?”

But, then they look on in shock. In what is perhaps the most epic moment of the Star Wars saga, Luke steps out of the smoke and gives a single brush of his shoulder.

In a rage, Kylo goes down to confront Luke. A lightsaber battle ensues. Finally, Luke allows Kylo to strike him, but the lightsaber’s blade goes right through him. Kylo steps directly in front of Luke and plunges the lightsaber into his chest. Again, it goes right through Luke.

Luke says, “See you around, kid” and disappears. Kylo has been deceived; Luke was never there, not physically anyway. He was still on Ahch-To. It was a Force projection that Kylo confronted.

In the midst of this deception, Rey is able to lead what is left of the Resistance to safety and escape upon the Millennium Falcon. They were saved by this deception. The deception cost Luke his life. Back on Ahch-To he collapses, his life drained by the immense act, and he becomes one with the Force.

He gave his life to save his friends.

In his state of humiliation (Christ’s refraining from making full use of his divine attributes according to his human nature), Jesus deceived Satan. Satan never would have attacked if Jesus’ divine glory had not been concealed by his humble flesh, just as Kylo never would have been distracted and attacked the Force projection had he known it concealed Luke’s absence.

Luke appeared to be entirely vulnerable to the fire power of the AT-M6s; Jesus appeared to be entirely vulnerable to the power of the religious leaders and Romans. Satan was as certain of victory as Kylo was when he ordered “fire” upon Luke. Satan swallowed Jesus in death, thinking he had won.

But, Christ was ever the Divine Son of God. He tore Satan apart in death. He exercised the full use of his divine attributes and returned to life, burst forth from the grave, and in so doing tore death apart. He destroyed the power of sin, death, and the devil.

“I will ransom them from the power of the grave;
I will redeem them from death.
O Death, I will be your plagues!
O Grave, I will be your destruction!” (Hosea 13:14; NKJV)

Satan was deceived, and we are saved.

In less than a week, we will celebrate again Christ’s birth. He comes in humbleness. He looks like any other child. He looks helpless like any other child. He relies upon Mary and Joseph to care for him. He does not exercise all his divine attributes. His glory does not shine forth. He conceals it under his humble flesh.

He conceals it to save us by defeating sin, death, and hell. Satan is deceived, and we are saved.
