“No One’s Ever Really Gone”

I remember the surprise I felt when that line was spoken months ago in a trailer. The line itself wasn’t surprising. The surprise was the evil laugh that followed. I had to rewind and listen again.

Was that really the Emperor? How could that be? Didn’t he perish at the end of Return of the Jedi? What was going on?

Possible Star Wars Episode IX Spoilers Ahead.

It turns out that Emperor Palpatine has been the master puppeteer sitting behind everything. Somehow he survived at the end of Return of the Jedi. He was weakened terribly and almost dead, but his evil dark powers have kept him alive. His evil has been growing, and now he is ready to lash out at the galaxy.

Emperor Palpatine is evil incarnate in the Star Wars universe. He is devious and underhanded. He operates mostly behind the scenes. He builds up his dark powers and then lashes out at the light when the time is right. He tempts and corrupts others. He tries to turn many people to the dark side.

He understands that those on the light side of the Force know it would be good if the Emperor was completely destroyed. He tries to use that to bait those Jedi. He tries to convince them to strike him down in cold-blooded murder. He wants them to channel their hatred. He wants them to fall to the dark side.

It would be wrong to strike down the Emperor with murderous hatred, and yet it seems like a good way to restore peace and order to the galaxy. He tries to make evil seem like good.

Darth Sidious by Julian-Faylona

The evil of Palpatine makes me think of the devil.

There is nothing good about the devil just like there is nothing good about Emperor Palpatine. The devil is going to do everything necessary to lead us all to hell. He is going to tempt us in every possible way. He will try to make evil seem like good.

Think about how people can sometimes think that evil is good and end up loosing their faith. If people continue to live in sinful ways and do not repent, they will lose their faith.

People think it is okay to have sex outside of marriage because it feels good. People think it is okay to spread gossip because it is just normal conversation. People think that it is okay to avoid worship and Bible study because they are kind to others and therefore “good” people who deserve heaven. All of these are slippery slopes to the dark path of being unrepentant for one’s sins.

There are other pieces of imagery that make me compare the Emperor to the devil.

  • The Emperor has been trapped on a Sith planet for a long time, but he is still able to reach out and tempt others. The devil is trapped in hell but is still able to reach out and tempt others.
  • The Emperor is surrounded by many hooded, evil characters. The devil is surrounded by demons.
  • The Emperor has his clutches deep in the hearts of the First Order / Empire. The devil has his clutches deep in the hearts of many people and is leading many people to hell.

The Point Is…

I won’t tell you how the Emperor is defeated…yet. I will come back to that in a different post. The main point is this: in our world, we desperately need a Savior from evil. We can’t rely on ourselves to overcome the devil. We don’t have the strength on our own. We are not good enough on our own. On our own, we are all born sinful and deserve punishment.

We needed Jesus to come. That is why Christmas is so important. Jesus came to this earth to be our Savior. He came to utterly defeat sin, death, and the devil. Through faith in Jesus, we are blessed with forgiveness and eternal life. The devil will never be gone. But he has been defeated. We don’t have to fear. Through Jesus we have life.
