The Sh’ma: Talks that Last a Lifetime

“… Talk about them when you sit at home” (verse 7b).

The Christian home is generally a safe place to talk about almost anything. When the talking ceases, it may be a signal that there is a problem related to neither topic nor setting. Silence often has more to do with insecurity, incompetence, or rigid resistance to being held accountable; or it can be symptomatic of a serious relational matter.

In some families, daily talks with children about Bible truth never happen. Family members may avoid talking about personal differences and private disputes. In our era, the social barrier between adults and young people can seem insurmountable. Many parents fall into the trap of thinking that their chatter about common interests (i.e. sports, hunting, fishing, a celebrity, an athlete, news about what’s going on at school, entertainment venues, etc.) is the key to generating productive conversations. This can mean that the truly important conversations about hope, faith, truth, or right and wrong are left undone. God wants parents to talk with their children about moral living as it is presented in his Word. He wants us to invite their questions about life and death, guilt, forgiveness, jobs, friends, miracles, marriage, fear, God’s love, broken relationships, prayer, and the promise of the resurrection. Bible talk is never cheap. It is alive with meaning, full of purpose, and laced with liberal doses of patience and love. Those of us who have been in the parenting business for a while know why meaningful communication with our children is so essential. We know that, If we fail to teach our children to love Jesus, the world will teach them not to.
