Jonathan Bourman–Exactly One Half of The Notable Podcast

Why do we say one half? Because Jonathan’s identical twin brother, Timothy is the other. Just a little background information to get you started here; Jonathan and Timothy are gifted at speaking for themselves so make sure you tune in for their personal notes on the Best Book.

BFB: We’re grateful for the podcast eliminating geographical limitations to sharing. Where do you currently serve?

JB: I live in beautiful and historic Aiken, South Carolina. It’s the deep south right on the Savannah River. My family and I love to visit the Carolina coast to grab shells, low country boil, and surf with boogie boards.

I also enjoy running and biking so being on the East Coast is great. We think Armageddon is happening if the temperature gets under 70.  (Jeans and 90 degrees is a thing for us!)

It sounds like you spend a lot of time together as a family.

I am one of the few people in life who got to pick their entire immediate family. (Or, more properly, I am one of the few people who got picked entirely by their immediate family!!) We talk about that a lot. There is a profound mutuality in it. We love that we got to pick each other. My wife and I in marriage and our daughter and us in adoption. It reminds us of how God wanted each us, sought us, and found us.

So in between all of these family activities, running ‘as far and fast as you can go’ you also share God’s word in multiple venues.

I want the Scriptures to open up to people. It’s really that simple. I want that because it’s there where we discover just how wide and how and long and deep the love of Christ is for us. Church planting has also been an incredibly joyful experience for me. It’s been wonderful to apply creativity to finding ways our church can get the Word to people.

You have a creative approach. What made you and your brother start The Notable Podcast?

There are a number of reasons. One was eminently practical. Another was just us wanting to offer something to God for all he’s given to us. Timothy was going through a vacancy at his church and wanted to offer his members a good resource to continue to grow in the Word even though he couldn’t be in eight places at one time. I offered to help him develop that resource. It was going to be Bible commentary that people could work through in a small group setting. What we did offered people theological expertise and pastoral teaching without a physical presence. More than that though, it was an idea born out of love.

We weren’t sure if anybody would listen except our mom and maybe our kids in some distant future.

We were sitting staring at the water at the beach in North Carolina in January of 2017. It was the earliest part of the year in which we were celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. We both have received so much as a pure gift from God and this was going to be an effort to return to the Scriptures and give to our world – as much of it as we could get to – what we have received in spades, the truth of the gospel. We wanted to model the approach on the ideal of sola scriptura. We just wanted to go to the Scriptures and see what God had for us there to believe. Thus, was born the idea of commenting straight through the Bible. We weren’t sure if anybody would listen except our mom and maybe our kids in some distant future.

How do you think it’s going so far?

Amos was our best. We were the freshest and encouraged even though the production value was lacking. Jude was tough for us for a lot of reasons. We petered out at the end of Jonah even though there is still a lot of good stuff in there.

We’re glad you’re continuing the journey. It’s a lot of work- what’s keeping you both going?

We learned of the power of the Word of God.

A lot of people started listening.

There was some kind of need we were meeting.

We want to keep working through the Bible so that eventually we have completed it. It is a massive project.

Indeed it is. Thank you for your service in sharing God’s word. We’re excited to listen and learn.
