More than Superheroes

Heroes of Faith – Aquila and Priscilla

Lately I have been thinking about some of the people in Scripture who only get mentioned in a few passages but they have an important role. These people could be considered small because we don’t know much about them but we see that they have big roles when it comes to speaking about Jesus. Just recently in a sermon I mentioned Epaphras. He only gets mentioned in a few places but he was a big help to the Apostle Paul. Epaphras helped Paul to share the love of Christ with the congregation in Colosse.

Two other people that helped Paul are a husband and wife team. In the book of Acts we hear about Aquila and Priscilla. Again, we do not know much about them but they carried out an important role. They shared their faith and the helped others to grow in their faith. They instructed Apollos to a more thorough understanding of Scripture. Apollos knew about Jesus and wanted to speak about him but he still needed to grow.

Acts 18:26 says, “He [Apollos] began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.” Priscilla and Aquila helped to train Apollos and then he did even more mission work. In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul mentioned how Apollos proclaimed the gospel to the Corinthian congregation.

I love how Aquila and Priscilla were carrying out the Great Commission. As Jesus says at the end of Matthew, Aquila and Priscilla were following his encouragement to “Go and make disciples.” I have met husband and wife teams like Aquila and Priscilla. These men and women know their Savior very well. They dig into the Scriptures for their own strength and courage. Then they boldly go out and share the message of Salvation. It doesn’t look like Aquila and Priscilla had much training to be missionaries. As far as the scriptures tell us, it looks like they knew the Word and they shared the Word.

It is important for all of us to think about how we can be like Aquila and Priscilla. How can we carry out our role in the Great Commission? How can we “Go and make disciples”? First we have to fight our own sinful nature. Our sinful nature wants us to be afraid of what might happen when we try to speak about Jesus. Our sinful nature wants us to think that we don’t know enough to talk about Jesus. Our sinful nature wants us to think that we will be ridiculed if we talk about Jesus. Our sinful nature wants us to think that we will be failures if we try to help others to become disciples of Jesus.

The solution to these temptations always goes back to Jesus. He promises to be with us. He will give us strength and courage. Where does this strength and courage come from? It comes from the powerful Word of God. There we see the message of wisdom that changes hearts. We see the full and free forgiveness that Jesus won through the cross. We see that even Jesus faced persecution and he stood up to that persecution. His forgiveness gives us strength because we have heaven waiting for us. Even if we fail to bring someone into God’s Family, we have eternal life. We have the greatest prize. Even though we may feel small at times, we are important to God. He gives us the huge gift of forgiveness. Because of that we are motivated to share our faith.

The Superheroes for Aquila and Priscilla are Ant-Man and the Wasp. Their movie comes out next week. Both heroes can shrink down to a tiny size. While that may not seem that impressive, they can actually do very incredible actions. If you don’t believe me, go back and check the Ant-Man movie from 2015 before you head to the theaters for the new movie. Starting in Captain America Civil War, Ant-Man also figured out how to enlarge his size and become giant. The littlest characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are some of the biggest heroes.
