Guardians of the Galaxy: The Ragtag Misfits
Today we go back to the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. I wanted to make a few comments about that movie before writing a post about the second movie. Through the Guardians of the Galaxy movies we are introduced to what comic fans refer to as Cosmic Marvel. This term refers to Marvel comic stories that are told in outer space. The movie doesn’t take long to get us away from planet Earth. In the first few minutes young Peter Quill is abducted by aliens. From that point on, the story never returns to Earth.
For this article I am going to focus on the people that are brought together to become the Guardians of the Galaxy. First we have Peter Quill. He was abducted by a group called the Ravagers. This is a group of pirates that does whatever they can to survive in the universe. Peter follows in their steps and we see him stealing a precious orb at the start of the movie. Second is Gamora. She attempts to get the orb away from Peter but is arrested in the process. She was abducted as a child and trained to be an assassin. Her abductor was Thanos and he had killed her family when he took her.
When Gamora tried to get the orb from Peter, we also meet Rocket and Groot. Groot is a tree-like creature that can only say, “I am Groot.” Groot is the last of his kind. Rocket is a genetically engineered raccoon. He was experimented on so that he is no longer an animal. He is a sentient being. He also is one-of-a-kind. Peter, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket were all arrested at the same time. While they are in prison, they meet Drax the Destroyer. Drax saw his entire family killed at the hands of Ronan the Accuser. Drax will do whatever it takes to get revenge on Ronan.
These five make up a ragtag group of misfits. They are all loners. They all care about themselves first and foremost. They really don’t have much reason to come together but they eventually do. They realize that the right thing to do is to prevent Ronan from destroying the planet Xandar. This idea of a ragtag group coming together for a good purpose reminds me of the Christian Church. The church is made up of a wide variety of people. We are not perfect people. As individuals, we sometimes feel very broken. We feel like others don’t understand exactly who we are. And yet, in Christ, we come together with a good purpose.

The Apostle Paul talks about this in 1 Corinthians 1:26-30. He says, “Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”
Christian people are not always the wisest people in the world by human standards. We might not be influential or of noble birth. We might even be lowly and despised. Regardless, Jesus has redeemed us. He has made us righteous through his blood which was shed on the cross. Now our good purpose is that we have a role in spreading this message of salvation to the world. Jesus paid for all sins. People receive the benefits of that redemption when they believe. We share that message so that many more may believe.
In some ways, the Christian Church is a ragtag group of misfits. If you look at scripture you see examples of believers who committed big sins. Paul had persecuted the church. King David committed adultery. Moses had killed an Egyptian. And yet, all these people believed in God and shared their faith. The Guardians of the Galaxy are ragtag misfits who came together to save a planet. The Christian Church is a ragtag group of misfits that come together to praise Jesus for his saving the world. We also want to share his love with others.
