Spider-man: Is Love His Greatest Power?

2016 is going to be a huge year for live-action superhero entertainment. There are many movies coming out including Batman V Superman, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, Suicide Squad, Doctor Strange, and more. On television we have Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter and others. There are so many that I can’t even keep up with them all. For you superhero fans who have been anxiously waiting for me to comment on these current shows, you will have to wait just a little bit longer. I am currently working on pulling together some ideas but I am not quite ready to release an article about a current show or film. In order to hold you over, here is a few more of my thoughts regarding Spider-Man. I look forward to seeing the new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Until then, I look back to his former movies.

The reason that so many people like Spider-man as their favorite hero is because it is easy to relate to him. That doesn’t mean that we have to struggle with using our spider-powers to save other people. We struggle with other problems. There are certain things about Spider-man that we experience in our lives. In his dual life as Peter Parker and as Spider-man, he experiences many difficulties.

Spider-man 2 from 2004 gives us a good look at the issues that Peter faces. He struggles to hold down a job while also being Spider-man. He is wearing himself thin by being so devoted to being a superhero that he can’t carry out the responsibilities he has as an employee. This leads to more problems when he loses his job and can barely pay the rent. Also because of his responsibilities as Spider-man, he is unable to have a good relationship with the love of his life, Mary Jane. Forget dating her, he can’t even be a good friend who makes it to an important event.

It becomes so difficult for Peter that he starts to think his life would be better if he weren’t Spider-man.Spider-man 2 He gets a push in that direction when his powers fail him. He thinks that he has been given a wonderful gift. He no longer needs to worry about saving people because his powers are gone. He is trying to explain to Mary Jane that he can now be there for her when disaster strikes. Doc Ock comes and kidnaps Mary Jane because he wants to fight Spider-man. At that point, when Mary Jane’s life is threatened, motivated by love, Peter’s powers return and he goes to fight Ock.

As I said, many people can relate to Peter’s problems. Many people have difficulty balancing their responsibilities in life. At times, our love life might be going terribly. Other times we may struggle at work or with having the money we need to pay our bills. We might think life would be easier if we didn’t have all this stress or all these responsibilities. Sometimes, our love for family and friends places us in difficult situations. If you think about it, it is Peter’s love that is both a strength and a weakness. It is a weakness at times because he is so concerned about others that he fails to carry out certain responsibilities at work. But it is also a strength in that it might even be his greatest power. His love for Mary Jane gave him the focus he needed to use his spider-powers.

In this life, our love for others is a great quality. But it can also be something that leads us to sin. We can at times love others so much that we fail to love God. Love for family can be a great blessing in our lives but it can also become something that we value more than God. Jesus said, “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:37-38).

Our love for others could lead to problems in our lives. It might lead us to neglect our responsibilities at work because our loved ones need us. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, it would be terrible for our faith if our love for family led us away from Jesus and his forgiveness. It would not be good if we loved spending time with our family so much that we avoided coming to church or neglected to spend time in God’s Word. Then our lives would become even more difficult.

When Jesus is first in our hearts, the problems of life become easier to bear. We have his forgiveness to comfort us. We have the hope of eternal life. His love motivates us to love others in the best possible way. Scripture tells us, “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Because Jesus died on the cross for us to take away all of our sins, we are able to serve others and show them true love.spider-man-2-spidey-doc-ock

It is certainly a good thing that Spider-man loves others. He loves his family and friends and he strives to protect them. Spider-man showed his love for Mary Jane by saving her from Doc Ock. But we know that there is a better love than even the love that Peter showed for Mary Jane. There is the love that Jesus showed for us by dying for our sins. Jesus’ love does not have the ups and downs that emotions can create. Jesus’ love doesn’t get all messed up like we can see with human relationships. Jesus’ love is immeasurable. His love is eternal. He planned to save us since before the creation of the world. His love is self-sacrificing. He chooses to love us. He is committed to us even though we have sinned. His great love empowers us in our life of faith. His love motivates us to show love to others. We show our love for others by giving them the message of Jesus which saves them eternally.

Spider-man History

Death of GwenOne of the events that shaped the history of Spider-man is the Death of Gwen Stacy. Gwen Stacy was Peter’s girlfriend at the time of her death. The Green Goblin had kidnapped her in order to challenge Spider-man to a battle. She died during the battle. Since this event happened 9 years before I was born and almost 20 years before I started reading comics, I knew about it before I read it. And yet, it was still incredible to see the events unfold on the page. Spider-man’s inability to save the girl he loved is an issue that still plagues him. He strives to make sure that event never repeats itself.
