Creativity in Christ Light: There Were 12 Disciples
Can you name the 12 disciples? Thanks to my 3rd grade teacher, I can. We learned the song There Were 12 Disciples in music class. I can still remember sitting around the piano with the rest of the students in our classroom, echoing back the lyrics until we could sing them from memory. The song I learned is still around. There’s even a rock version for some added fun!
Below you’ll find a few favorite resources on teaching about Jesus’ disciples. You can also check my Pinterest board for more ideas.
I love coloring pages! My students enjoy them as well ☻ They are great for fine motor skills, patience, and occupying early finishers in a multi-grade classroom. (Don’t worry… coloring isn’t the only activity for early finishers.)
This particular coloring page really caught my eye as a nice visual representation of Jesus and his 12 disciples, bringing to mind the image of picking up a cross and following. You can find it here on Teacher’s Pay Teachers. It’s a free download, and the seller Charlotte’s Clips also has several Biblical clip art sets for sale. These sets would be great for making your own activities or using on interactive whiteboards to tell the lesson. You could also use them in combination with some screen capture software like Camtasia to make your own videos. Or take it to the next level and have the upper graders make videos for the lower graders to watch.
Another Teacher’s Pay Teachers seller with great Biblical resources is Bonnie Kathryn Teaching. I bought her People of the Bible mega bundle, but you can also get just the disciples for $5. The disciples bundle includes some writing assignments, center activities, a book to make, and other projects along with a block plan and lesson information for the teacher. This would work really well as a break from the usual Christ Light routine, a special afternoon devotion series with a language arts tie-in, or for Sunday School.
The blog To the Moon and Back has a free printable card game which is like Old Maid but features the 12 Disciples. Included in the post are a list of other resources, including a link to this fun project using an egg carton and a cute snack idea!

Learning about the disciples is a great time for upper graders to put their research and presentation skills to work. Students could use Google Sites to make an informative website about the disciples. Assign individuals or small groups to each disciples and guide them in discovering important information to add to their sites. Their information could also be organized in a collaborative presentation using Google Slides and then presented to another classroom or even a Bible Study group at church. Similarly, they could digitally publish their work with a tool like Sway or an app like Book Creator. The authors at The Overview Bible Project have an example to check out.
It wouldn’t be a list of resources without mentioning the images at Free Bible Images. I love using the picture images when they’re available. I think it really helps my students understand that Jesus and the disciples were real people in a way that illustrations don’t. I’m really in love with the story view feature that I mentioned last week. No more downloading!
