The History of Redemption Part 6: Evil Enters In

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (Romans 8:20, Genesis 6:5 ESV)

What a remarkable change has taken place as a result of sin! It was not just some so called little sin either, the incidental eating of a piece of fruit. Oh no, it was the mother of all other sins: It was cold, calculating, totally wicked unbelief. There was no excuse for it. Adam and Eve had to be tempted by Satan on the outside, through the use of the serpent because he could not get inside of them before they sinned. So they had the ability to resist. They had both heard and experienced nothing but good from God, and so had no reason at all to doubt his love and kindness. Of the serpent and the voice of Satan they had no experience at all, not the slightest reason why they should believe him instead of God. Nevertheless that’s what they did. And part and parcel of their unbelief is an attempted deicide, i.e., they are trying to kill God and be God themselves. That is ultimately what unbelief is and always does; it wants to replace the true God with me.

Adam has become a sinner and he proves it by what he does.

He is in a free fall. And all that he does shows that sin has destroyed his holiness and righteousness. Additionally it has marred almost beyond recognition his reason, will, and emotion, those organs of the soul that contained and should have displayed holiness and righteousness. For he acts stupidly. He hides from the God who is everywhere. He tries to avoid confession to the God who knows everything. Nevertheless patiently God continues the discourse, giving Adam every opportunity again and again to confess and flee for mercy.
