Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” (Genesis 1:26-27, 31; 2:22, 25)

Made In His Image

To create man in his image, God obviously didn’t hold a mirror in one hand and a sculpting knife in the other. God is spirit, and a spirit does not have flesh and blood or shape. So to make man in his image, God had to make their spiritual aspect, or soul, similar to his. Their physical organs were not similar to him, but the organs of their soul, if you will, were similar to his. For convenience, we can identify these organs as their intellect, emotions, and will. Man comprehended and analyzed and understood the world around him similar to the way God did. Man felt about things as God felt about them. God saw that his creation was good; man also felt good about it. God loves good and hates evil; so did man. So man also wanted what God wanted and did not want what God did not want. They made decisions that were in harmony with God’s will.

In other words, the difference between man and beast isn’t how they walk or move, and isn’t even the presence or absence of a soul. It’s in the kind of soul God gave to each. God created man to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Everything mankind does, even today, whether they realize it or not, they do in a relationship with God – either in harmony with him, as his friend, or against him, as his enemy. That makes the soul or life of man different from that of the animals.

Prayer: Heavenly Father! I confess that I am not who you created me to be. My image, which too easily reflects and resembles the ways of the world and its people, has been everything but yours. Forgive me for taking this beautiful gift of life and using it for so much that is not only not good but inherently evil. As I become more fully aware of who I am and who you are, I am humbled and amazed by the fact that you wanted and created me…to be like you. I am even more humbled and more amazed by the fact that you STILL want me to be yours…even though I am nothing like you. Thank you for sending your Son down to this ungood world and ungood me to restore my relationship with you. Thank you for recreating me through faith into one righteous and holy in your sight. Now as your beloved reconciled child, lead me to have a heart like your’s–a heart which loves good and hates evil and a heart that makes decisions that are in harmony with your will. Amen!
