Sparrow performed by Audrey Assad

Sparrow: About

This is a modernized version of the old hymn “His Eye Is On The Sparrow”, by Audrey Assad, from her album “Heart”. The lyrics are a paraphrase of the original hymn written by Civilla D. Martin, but the melody is almost entirely different from the original one composed by Charles H. Gabriel. Here’s the story about the origin of this song, in the words of the author Civilla Martin:

Based upon Jesus’ words recorded in Matthew 10:29-31 Civilla Martin was inspired to write the lyrics to the Gospel song following a visit to a Christian couple in New York state:

Early in the spring of 1905, my husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York. We contracted a deep friendship for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle—true saints of God. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Her husband was an incurable cripple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheel chair. Despite their afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them for the secret of it. Mrs. Doolittle’s reply was simple: ‘His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.’ The beauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin and me. The hymn ‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow’ was the outcome of that experience.”

Sparrow: Lyrics

Why should I be lonely,
Long for heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion
And a constant Friend I know

I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free
For His eye is on the sparrow,
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He’s watching me

Why should I be troubled
When His tender word I hear
Know I rest on His goodness
In my doubt and in my fear

I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free
For His eye is on the sparrow,
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know…

I sing because He loves me,
I sing because I’m free
For His eye is on the sparrow,
His eye is on the sparrow
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He’s watching me
He’s watching me
He’s watching you
He’s watching me
