Jesus – The Savior Promised Long Ago

It may not always seem like it, but when you have to wait a long time for something, it gives you more joy than if it came right away. It’s called “delayed gratification,” and it’s why it feels so good to open your presents on Christmas morning (or Christmas Eve), why dessert tastes so much better when you eat your whole dinner first, and why it feels so good to get out of the car at grandma’s house after a long drive. The waiting and anticipation makes the joy that much greater.

We don’t know if that’s the reason God waited so long to send Jesus, but we do know that the whole world had waited a long time for the birth of the Savior. When Adam and Eve brought sin and death into the world, God didn’t wait to give them a promise that he would take care of it. But he did wait to bring the fulfillment of that promise.

However, during the years between that first promise and coming of Jesus, God gave his promise again and again, and in many different ways. He promised to Abraham that through his descendent all nations would be blessed. He gave the Israelites the Passover, a yearly reminder that there would be a sacrifice for sin. He sent prophets to point to the coming Savior. He made the world wait, but he didn’t leave them without hope.

While we don’t know why God waited as long as he did to send Jesus into the world, we do know that Jesus’s coming brought true joy. At long last, the promises had been fulfilled. Through the baby born in Bethlehem, God’s plan to put an end to sin would be complete. Jesus would take on all sin – from Adam and Eve to us and to the end of time – and would give us a future in heaven someday.

We are still waiting for heaven. The time has not yet come when God will end this world and bring about the new one. But when he does, our joy will be that much greater for having waited for it. Just like the great joy that came when Jesus was born, we will have great joy when we see him face to face in heaven.

Prayer: Jesus, give us patience to wait for the great joy we’ll have when we meet you in heaven. Amen.
