Q: If God created everything…and sin is in the world…doesn’t that mean God created sin?

A: Thanks for asking!

This is a typical A + B = C deduction.  A is true, and B is true; therefore, C must be true.

A: God created everything.   +

B: Sin exists.   =

C: God created sin.

However, the fact that A & B are true does not always mean that C must necessarily be true.  This is an invalid argument.  Consider another example:

A: Hospitals perform surgery.

B: People die in hospitals.

C: I shouldn’t go to the hospital for my surgery, unless I want to die.

Yes, hospitals perform surgeries.  And unfortunately, people die in hospitals; even the best hospital in the world cannot prevent every death.  The conclusion (point C above) is an invalid conclusion.

Why?  “People die in hospitals,” true – but A + B does not ALWAYS mean C.

B: Therefore, God can make anything and do anything.

C: “Can God make a rock so heavy that he can’t lift it?”

D: Therefore, God must not be almighty.

 

Again, it’s an invalid argument.  Besides being irrelevant, the argument is contradictory.  It is purposely worded to contradict itself.

Back to our main question, then: Is God responsible for sin? 

No.  God’s holiness does not permit sin, does not create sin, does not tempt to sin.  It is impossible for God to sin (yes, even though he is almighty!)  Holiness is one of God’s unchanging attributes, one of his unchanging characteristics.

Let me reiterate: Almighty God cannot sin.  

 

That gives us the full picture of God’s might and power.  God can do anything that is in line with his nature and will.  In his God-ness, God is holy and perfect; he does not change; he cannot lie; he cannot tempt.

Even more clearly, the Bible tells us where sin comes from:

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin…  Romans 5:12

Rather than try to blame God for sin, let us rejoice that God has provided a solution for sin! Jesus Christ carried the full weight of sin, bore the complete punishment for sin – and God now freely gives his forgiveness through Word and Sacrament.  Such wonderful news always results in praise of the One who is holy.  May the song of those in heaven be our closing prayer today:

Great and marvellous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty!  Just and true are your ways, King of ages!  Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name?  For you alone are holy!  All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.  Revelation 15:3-4
