In The Garden a hymn for Holy Week
Thanks to Mike Westendorf for sharing his new take on the hymn Go to Dark Gethsemane
originally written by James Montgomery.
Mike shared the following with us about the hymn:
I have always loved this hymn. To me, it is the Lenten version of “What Child is This”, a hymn that moves beyond the small baby, but references the cross. I love the hymns that take a larger view of the story within their smaller context. The song text starts in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus faced perhaps his greatest threat to the mission and yet the hymn doesn’t stop there, but finishes with the Easter triumph.
Artistically, I find it very interesting that some of the most intense moments of the passion story, gardens tend to be the backdrop and setting. Eden where it all went wrong, Gethsemane where the Savior found the strength to move forward and the Easter Garden and the empty tomb where eternal life for all who believe was fully realized. This song came together around the garden theme as I worked through the lyrics of the old hymn. I hope that it bring a new focus to one of the great Lenten and Easter songs in the church.

In the Garden: Lyrics
Go to dark Gethsemane,
ye that feel the tempters power
Your redeemer’s conflict see,
watch with him one bitter hour
Turn not from his griefs away,
hear the Savior as he prays
Refrain
In the Garden came the fall of man,
Pride and fear bringing deaths decay
Yet in the Garden the angel rolled the stone,
to show the stain of our sin, is washed away

All is quiet, all is gloom,

In the Garden where Death had begun,
where a promise had been made
That in a garden the end of death would come,
when the Savior from our sin, walked from the grave

I enjoyed this devotional but wonder – The lyrics quoted here are those of the hymn “Go to Dark Gethsemane,” a different song than “In the Garden.”
