God of Angel Armies by Chris Tomlin

Just in time for the new year, Christian artist Chris Tomlin released his latest album Burning Lights on January 4, 2013. The album was scheduled to be released fall of 2012, but a late song addition delayed production. The song that delayed the production was an unplanned song written in one night by Chris Tomlin and his friend Ed Cash called God Of Angel Armies and also known as Whom Shall I Fear? The song was written to help a loved one who was gripped with certain fears and under spiritual attack. The addition of the song was well worth the wait and in my opinion well-timed for the new year.

I say this because I have noticed a greater sense of fear in people this new year than in the past. How about you? Perhaps the fear is a remnant of the whole Mayan calendar thing. Perhaps people are still in the aftermath of Sandy Hook, or Hurricane Sandy, or the Christmas tornado outbreak. Perhaps it is because our world is becoming increasingly wicked as Jesus said would happen.

As we begin a new year of uncertainty in an evil world every believer needs reminders of God’s power, protection, and promises. This song delivers them. The lyrics read like many of the psalms and vividly remind us of the strength and power of our Savior God in the midst of the spiritual battles, fear and challenges of life. There is no direct mention of Jesus name in the song. Jesus however is the Light that shines in the darkness, the faithful One, the One for whom angels sing and defend, the One who forever reigns, our friend who defends us, the One who is with us always, our Deliverer, and the only One who can and has saved us. As we continue forward into 2013 continue to put your trust in the God of Angel Armies. He is our Savior, our God, and one who calls us friend. With Jesus the God of angel armies by our side, whom shall we fear? Scripture references include Psalm 50:15, Psalm 2,  Psalm 18:2, Psalm 27, Psalm 40:17, Psalm 70:5, Psalm 140:7, Psalm 144:2, Psalm 110, 2 King 6:8-23, Psalm 143, Isaiah 54:17, Psalm 148, Deuteronomy 31:8, Luke 1:33, Matthew 2:21-23, Luke 20:43, John 1:9, Acts 2:35, Hebrews 1:13, Ephesians 6:10-18, and Colossians 1:17.
