The Mandalorian has been a fantastic piece of Star Wars storytelling and imagery. There are always lots of Easter eggs to serve the long-time fans of Star Wars. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, the executive producers of The Mandalorian, have used the previous 11 episodes to draw us into a conversation of the past. These episodes have been like familiar friends coming over to talk about the good old days.

But in Chapter 12: The Siege, there appears to be major foreshadowing going on. Foreshadowing is “a literary device to hint at or allude to future plot developments.” (Dictionary.com)

In the beginning of Chapter 12, Mando and The Child land the severely damaged Razor Crest on Nevarro for repairs from people Mando trusts. Nevarro has been cleaned up since the last time Mando fled with The Child from the planet. Friends of Mando are now in charge. Cara Dune is the marshal. Greef Karga is the new Magistrate. Greef has even hired Mythrol, who Mando captured in the first scene of the first episode, to help him out.

Nevarro is now a peaceful planet. There is a statue in the town square of IG-11, the droid who died saving Mando, Cara, and Greef from the Empire. The seedy bounty hunter bar has now become an elementary school where Mando leaves the Child at a desk for some education from the droid teacher.

Everything is peaceful on Nevarro except for an old, abandoned Imperial base. Greef and Cara want Mando’s help in blowing it up. Mythrol joins the trio in their excursion.

The siege of the Imperial base becomes much more difficult when the quartet quickly learns the base is not abandoned. They work to sabotage the reactor controls.

That’s when they discover the true purpose of this base.

The quartet finds a creepy science lab hidden in the Imperial base. It’s complete with what appear to be clones in tubes.

They play a hologram of Dr. Pershing, who extracted blood from The Child way back in Chapter 3. This extraction was for a mysterious something 9 episodes earlier.

Now it looks like we know what that something was. Dr. Pershing’s hologram says, “I doubt we’ll find a donor with a higher M count.”

The “M count” he’s referring to is the much fan-maligned Midi-chlorian count that George Lucas introduced in The Phantom Menace as the reasoning for some beings in the galaxy being Force-sensitive.

The Child has a very high “M count,” meaning he is very strong in the Force. These Midi-chlorians are the genetic material that Herzog references in Chapter 3 in his conversation with Dr. Pershing.

What does the Empire want with Midi-chlorians? This is where the foreshadowing comes in.

There were big questions that were raised in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Questions like “Who is Rey?” “Who is Snoke?” And then, “How did Emperor Palpatine – the Big Baddie from the previous six movies – get here?!”

We eventually learn that Snoke was a Force-sensitive clone. Emperor Palpatine was brought back also as a Force-sensitive clone by using the genetic material of unnamed Force-sensitive beings. We learn from Palpatine that Rey is the granddaughter of the Emperor’s clone.

What a mess!

It looks like Favreau and Filoni are attempting to clean up this mess with this foreshadowing.

It appears as if The Child’s blood is being used to make Force-sensitive clones. The clones in the tubes in the lab look like Snoke. In The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine had a whole set of jars of extra Snokes at the ready. Just in case.

Favreau and Filoni are trying to undo the damage to the Star Wars franchise caused by directors J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson. (If you think that I didn’t enjoy the last three movies, you would be correct!)

The Old Testament Scriptures are full of foreshadowing, too. The foreshadowing in the Old Testament is all about undoing the damage that Adam and Eve caused in the Garden of Eden.

The Holy Spirit’s foreshadowing helps us see God’s plan of salvation from beginning to ending. The foreshadowing in Scripture all points to Jesus Christ – his entrance into humanity, innocent suffering, redemptive death, and glorious resurrection.

Here are just a few examples:

New Testament fulfillment:
“In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.’” (Luke 1:26-29)

Old Testament foreshadowing Jesus’ suffering and death:
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? My groaning does nothing to save me. My God, I call out by day, but you do not answer. I call out by night, but there is no relief for me. … For dogs have surrounded me. A band of evil men has encircled me. They have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones. They stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them. For my clothing they cast lots.” (Psalm 22:1,2, 16-18)

New Testament fulfillment:
“After they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among themselves by casting lots. Then they sat down and were keeping watch over him there. Above his head they posted the written charge against him: ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.’ At the same time two criminals were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. People who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, and saying, ‘You who were going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!’ In the same way the chief priests, experts in the law, and elders kept mocking him. They said, ‘He saved others, but he cannot save himself. If he’s the King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now, if he wants him, because he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’’ In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with him kept insulting him. From the sixth hour until the ninth hour, there was darkness over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?‘ which means ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'”(Matthew 27:35-46)

Old Testament foreshadowing Jesus’ resurrection:
“Even my flesh will dwell securely because you will not abandon my life to the grave. You will not let your favored one see decay.” (Psalm 16:9-11)

New Testament fulfillment:
“He saw what was coming and spoke about the resurrection of Christ, saying that he was neither abandoned to the grave nor did his flesh see decay.^’” (Acts 2:31)

We call this foreshadowing in the Old Testament “prophecy.”

In fact, there are more than 300 prophecies in the Old Testament declaring that God’s Son was coming to clean up humanity’s mess. He would enter our world to rescue us from the damage we caused. These prophecies give specifics for the Son of God’s birthplace, temptation, ministry, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension.

In his book, Science Speaks, Dr. Peter Stoner says that the odds of Jesus fulfilling all 300 prophecies are 1 in 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. I think that’s 1 in ten-octillion. The odds of you being struck and killed by lightning is 1 in 2,000,000. The possibility of you being attacked by a shark is 1 in 3,750,000.

I think that Favreau and Filoni are master storytellers. They are able to weave Easter eggs into The Mandalorian for fans to find. If they can pull off this foreshadowing to fix the last three movies, then they are even better storytellers than I imagine.

The Holy Spirit is the divine Master storyteller. He uses prophets, evangelists, and apostles to weave an intricate and perfect story of prophecy and fulfillment, of Easter eggs and foreshadowing. No flaws. No mistakes. All to tell us the story of salvation from Garden to Garden.

And every word of this divine story is about Jesus Christ – the Savior from humanity’s mess and the Rescuer from the devil’s hellish prison.
