The Ancient of Days on Election Day

On this day, some will win, and some will lose.

On this day, some will be happy, and some will be sad.

On this day, some questions will be answered, and even more will be created.

On this day, as you vote and learn of results, remember who it is that is ultimately in control.

In the book of Daniel, our God is called the “Ancient of Days.”

What does this title mean for us everyday?

What does this title mean for us specifically on election day?

Be edified as you share in God’s glory through these sights, songs, and stories.

Sight

Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 5:9 by Chris Powers

In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

Daniel 7:13-14

And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.

Revelation 5:9

Story

by Stephen Weber

Ancient of Days, we read of your great works and miraculous provisions throughout the generations. Remembering the days of old is a glimpse of your sovereignty as you led your people out of captivity, through famine and flood, through wars and mighty storms. We are not self-sufficient, but our sufficiency is totally reliant on you, the Ancient of Days! You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Even as you brought your people through in the days of old, you will see us through all the way to the other side of eternity! We thank you for Jesus, our solid Rock, and mighty fortress. In him will I trust, and through him will I persevere. Amen.

The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever.” And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying: “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reignRev. 11:15-17

Lord Jesus, before long we’ll sing of your great majesty to Handel’s grand melody. “And He shall reign forever and ever, King of kings! and Lord of lords! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” Yet we don’t have to wait for the season Advent to begin. Election Day is a perfect day to rise to our feet, or fall to our faces, and worship you with peace-filled, joy-laden, heart-captured hearts.

For you are the King of kings and Lord of lords—the ruler of the kings of the earth and everything else. No premier or president, emperor or autocrat, dictator or potentate is a threat to your kingdom or necessary to your purposes. Demons tremble at your name, and stars sing your praise; fierce hurricanes become gentle zephyrs, and placid lakes become roaring oceans all in keeping with your purposes, timing, and glory.

On this Election Day, we bow to you and cast our votes. The brokenness in our country, hearts, and world leads us to cry out, “How long, Oh, Lord? How long before you return, Lord Jesus, and finish making all things new?”

Until that Day, we will seek to “Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.” (1 Pet. 2:7). We will seek to live as good citizens of two kingdoms—the city of man and the City of God. We will seek to adorn the gospel (Tit. 2:10), serve you faith-fully, and love our neighbors.

Whatever the results of this Presidential election (as well as the many, many other offices which will be decided today), we affirm with renewed confidence and profound joy, “Jesus is Lord!” Hallelujah, what a Savior; Hallelujah, what a salvation. You will reign forever and ever! So very Amen we pray, in your loving and triumphant name.
