The Bleeding Woman

The woman we meet is quite the opposite of Jairus. Her ailment, menstrual hemorrhaging, was humiliating and left her in a constant state of uncleanliness. This meant she could not go to the temple or synagogue, nor was she permitted to have intercourse with her husband. She suffered embarrassment, loneliness, poverty, and hopelessness.

As a woman, the Levitical laws concerning mensuration disturb me. For a week each month, women could not be a part of religious life or be with their husbands. That doesn’t seem fair. Why did God make this rule? Leviticus 15:19-33

During her time of separation, a woman would remember the curse of sin that came to Eve after the Fall (Genesis 3:16). Childbearing, and all that goes with it, would cause pain. This beautiful part of God’s perfect creation had been broken by sin. Now, the very nature of a woman kept her separate from God. In the Levitical law, God designed a special message just for women reminding them that the world and their bodies were not the way they were meant to be. She would long for bodily and relational restoration.

Of course, Jesus could not move on without addressing the woman who had secretly touched him. Ordinarily, her touch would have made Jesus unclean until sundown, but the opposite happened. Jesus was here to undo all that sin had cursed. He made the unclean clean. He removed her shame and cause for separation. Loneliness was eternally banished when he addressed her as daughter. He claimed her as part of his family.
