You are Not Unnecessary
Last week I said I wasn’t necessary. I stand by that statement.
But it’s not the whole story.
I’m not necessary. But that doesn’t make me superfluous. It doesn’t mean I’m useless. It doesn’t turn me into a blob of tissue for which there is no purpose.
God doesn’t need you. He created the world without your input. He sculpted your body and soul without your aid. And when he rescued you from sin, death, and hell, he died on the cross without you giving him one little bit of permission. When he recreated your life, you didn’t even ask him to do it. You are his, and everything he has done for you he did without your involvement. You were completely passive in the process.
But despite all that, God has chosen to make you indispensable to his plan.

That much is true. But did you know he chose the exact moment of your birth as well? “My times are in your hands,” Psalm 31:15 says. God chose a time for you.
Why?
Ephesians 2:8-10 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
God saved us by grace. We weren’t necessary in that process at all, except as the people being saved. As someone much smarter than me observed, “The only thing we brought to our salvation was our sins.”
But did you see? We’re God’s workmanship. He created us… to do good works. God prepared those good works in advance for us to do.
God made us to do something.
He created you to be his hands on earth, to show love to those around you, to share his praises, to encourage, to tell others about Jesus, to serve others, to raise children, to fulfill the roles he’s placed you in.
You’re not useless. God made you to do something. You’re not purposeless. You have been created to sing the praises of him who brought you out of darkness and into his marvelous light!
And when you have these two thoughts balanced, you’ll find yourself in a good spot.
You’re not necessary. God can use other people to serve. It takes the pressure off. I needed that lesson last week.
You are necessary. God created you to do something no one else can do. I need to hear that truth, too. It means that I am special because God has truly made me unique, to do good works he himself planned out for me to do!
Two conflicting statements?
Not really. Not when you understand them. And they’re both so freeing and so humbling. Our God is so big, he doesn’t need us. And yet, he chooses to use us to do his work on earth.
That’s pretty nifty, I think.
