The Chosen One

“You refer to the prophecy of the one who will bring balance to the Force. You believe it’s this… boy?”

Mace Windu

Oh, man. I remember when I first heard that line of dialogue from the cool Jedi dude I didn’t even know the name of yet when the music video for “Duel of the Fates” was released. You can watch the whole video here if you’ve not seen it or you just need a reminder of a time when everyone was really really psyched for Episode I.

There was a lot to get excited about in that video, not the least of which was the awesome music and Darth Maul’s opening lines.

But that bit about the prophecy? I was all excited about that. This entire concept that Anakin Skywalker was part of some bigger picture, was someone that the Jedi had been looking forward to – I loved that concept.

The concept has… evolved a fair bit over the years. You can read all about the Chosen One in this Wookiepedia article.

For the purposes of this article, though, we’re going to keep it to just Episode I. What did we know about the prophecy at that point?

Someone would come to bring balance to the Force. Qui-Gon thought it was Anakin because of his midichlorian levels, as well as how he already intuitively used the Force. And… that’s about it, isn’t it?

Honestly, I was both excited and disappointed by that story thread after seeing it in 1999. Excited because it was there! There’s this prophesied Chosen One in canon! Disappointed because… we didn’t find out enough about it.

Episode II mostly ignored that thread, and Episode III… well, it was back, but only kind of. (The Clone Wars series did pick up that thread, I understand, but I’ve seen very few episodes of that series…)

But here’s the interesting thing about Episode I and the Chosen One Prophecy: The Jedi Council decides that Anakin shouldn’t be trained as a Jedi.

They turn their backs on the Chosen One.

Granted, it’s not like there were a lot of signs saying that Anakin was clearly the one to be looking for. He was already strong in the Force, sure, but it’s not like he was born of a virgin or anything.

Oops.

But that last part’s going to be talked about tomorrow, I believe, so let’s just leave that aside for the moment.

It’s not like there were signs thousands of years old built up over generations of prophets. It’s not like the prophecy of the Chosen One specified what city he would be born in. It’s not like it talked about him doing miracles like giving sight to the blind. It’s not like the Chosen One was going to outdo the miracles of the past. It’s not like the death of the Chosen One was explicitly painted in the Jedi prophesies. It’s not like there were prophecies about the Chosen One rising from the dead.

So I suppose I can’t overly-fault the Jedi Council in rejecting little Anakin. There just wasn’t much to go on. It’s not like they’d seen Return of the Jedi or anything.

But back when I first saw that video, when the concept of the Chosen One was first introduced, before we knew much of anything about what would happen in the prequel trilogy…. oh, man, I loved that idea.

And I think it’s something pretty much every culture loves. Chosen Ones are featured in stories around the world, after all.

And maybe there’s a reason for that.

I just can’t figure out why that might be…
