Psalm 67–May the People’s Praise You

Why does God bless his people?

God blesses us like he did Abraham, Issac, Jacob, and countless others throughout the Bible so that we might be blessings to all peoples of the earth. God calls us so that he can send us. God fills us with his grace and mercy so that we might be conduits of his grace and mercy to others throughout the whole wide world. One of the great dangers we face as Christians is that we fail to connect God’s blessings in our lives with God’s purpose for our lives.

The Psalm of the Week for Easter 3, Psalm 67 teaches us “that although God is our God he is not ours to hoard. He will be no less ours when we have shared him with others. In fact, we will be enriched by such sharing. Our God is generous with the grace and forgiveness that he provides for the whole world as he is with the harvest of food which he pours out on the earth.” (John Brug, Psalms 1-72, p. 611)

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us—so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Psalm 67:1-7

In Psalm 67, “God’s people celebrate the privileges of belonging to God, and they ask God to continue those privileges–grace, blessings and the light of God’s presence–so that those who don’t know God will be drawn to him. The song looks forward to a time when outsiders, those not of Israel, will be brought inside and become part of God’s people, receiving his blessings and singing his praise.” (Lydia Brownback in Sing a New Song p. 154)

Keith and Kristyn Getty (and friends) have put together a modern take on Psalm 67 which captures the profound nature of the purpose of God’s blessing in our lives.

May the People’s Praise You: Lyrics

You have called us out of darkest night
Into Your glorious light
That we may sing the wonders of
The risen Christ

May our every breath retell the grace
That broke into our strife
With boundless love and deepest joy
With endless life

Chorus:
May the peoples praise You
Let the nations be glad
All Your blessing comes
That we may praise
May praise the Name of Jesus

All the earth is Yours and all within
Each harvest is Your own
And from Your hand we give to You
To make Christ known

May the seeds of mercy grow in us
For those who have not heard
May songs of praise build lives of grace
To spread Your Word

CHORUS

This our holy privilege to declare
Your praises and Your name
To every nation, tribe and tongue,
Your church proclaims

CHORUS

Holy, holy is the Lord Almighty
Worthy, worthy is the Lamb Who was slain
Holy, holy is the Lord Almighty
All creation praise Your glorious Name

CHORUS
