I
Tell us why you love this fiction world.
Ever since I was young I have loved comics. My sister thought I was a nerd. Turns out, the joke’s on her since now comic movies are super popular and she has to ask me for help with entertainment suggestions for her two sons.
As I got older I realized that comics are an interesting commentary on culture. When you read comics from different eras, you can see the influence of those times. When Mark asked me to apply my faith to comics, it was easy for me to say yes. I was like “I can get paid for looking at comics from a Christian perspective? Sign me up.” Then Mark told me it was not a paid position. Actually, that conversation did not happen.
What influence do you draw from these comics?
That is probably not an easy question for me to answer. Ultimately my Christian faith influences what I do and my perspective on life. However, I draw lots of connections between the things I love. I connect my love of comics to my relationship with my wife and daughter. For example, I’ll be writing about why I say that Captain Marvel is my daughter Libby’s favorite superhero. Since my daughter is very non-verbal, it will be more about connections I have made between Captain Marvel and Libby.

Name something about yourself that might surprise people.
I’m kind of an open book when it comes to my life, especially if you follow me on Facebook. I run marathons, I love almost all Wisconsin Sports (because of that people might be surprised that I like the Minnesota Wild), I have a blind daughter who we adopted when she was 7 months old, I work with Special Ministries for the Wisconsin Synod. I share all this stuff on my Facebook or in conversations so it isn’t really unexpected.
How do you unwind?
I can run on the treadmill for many miles while watching a comic movie. If I had a bad day, a comic movie or thinking about comics can help me relax.
Which Ninja Turtle would you be?
I pick Donatello. He was the smart one who invented cool stuff for the team. I always like intelligent characters. That is probably why Iron Man is my all-time favorite Superhero and Aaron Rodgers is an awesome quarterback.
