Teaching Little Ones about Lent

40 days. 40 days to prepare our hearts, lives, families, and classrooms for the roller-coaster of Holy Week. Having just celebrated the 100th day of school in my classroom, 40 days doesn’t seem like much time. There are so many important truths that come out of Lent. Below and on my Pinterest board, you’ll find some resources to help convey these truths during the next 40 days and beyond.

Changing up our devotion routine is my simple switch for new church seasons. Celebrate Jesus! at Easter has been my go-to for the past several years. This year I’m excited to check out Forty Names of Jesus. I like the idea the author gives for a paper chain counting down to Easter — countdowns are always popular in my classroom! I’m also envisioning a Google Slide presentation so the names and key points are visual for my students. If my vision becomes a reality, I will share 🙂

I also came across a Lent reading plan for The Jesus Storybook Bible. It’s dated 2015, but can easily be updated. On its own, this reading plan would make for great bedtime stories, afternoon devotions, or read-aloud time. You can also combine it with the companion DVDs and these activities to make your Lent preparation extra special.

I love this idea for Lent Prayer Pals by Owl Star Teaching Resources. It’s like Secret Santa, except prayers instead of presents. This resource is a free download and can easily be used in a variety of situations.

This cross project combines my love of forgiveness and spackling compound! What about adapting this Lent Jellybean program for classroom use? Any teacher knows that the days before Easter can seem endless! A really big jar for your classroom and lots of colored jellybeans (or maybe beads or pom poms to reduce the snacking temptation) can turn the focus back towards good behavior. My favorite part is that you fill the rest of the container with white jellybeans on Easter to show God’s undeserved, unearned grace.
