“Children of the Light” a song for Epiphany

One of the themes prevalent in the season of Epiphany is the correlation between darkness and light when it comes to our spiritual lives and the work that Christ has accomplished. Recently, a member of my congregation, David Finn, who leads our worship ensemble, wrote a song “Children of the Light” that captures this theme well. I asked him to explain a little more about the origin of the song and its imagery. Below is the answer he shared with me:

The song was inspired by the section in Ephesians 4 & 5 which talks about living as children of light. I was reflecting on a very dark period in my life where I was walking in darkness. God pulled me out, basically from the dead and filled me up with a love for life again. I started thinking about the horror all parents go through when they have to watch their children go through something that is completely out of their control. We are forced to give it to God. God, our awesome Father does have control and promises to always seek us when we’re lost, as our Good Shepherd.

Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” It’s so simple, but not always easy to do. But that is our calling, each and every one of us. Christ pulled all of us out of darkness and so we are to reciprocate that light to everyone, in everything we do. When I read verse 14, which says, “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you”, a melody started running through my head. That is where the song started.

I sent the lyrics, chord progression, and a recording of me singing the melody and playing the guitar part off to my friends Joel Lauber and Eric Bilitz, who wrote the piano and percussion parts.
