Teaching Children about Abraham

father abraham

We started our lessons on Abraham last week. That always means singing the “Father Abraham” song in my classroom. I have fond memories of singing this when I was in grade school with all the fun actions! One thing I don’t remember is understanding the connection between the song and the Christ Light lesson, beyond the obvious use of Abraham’s name. I was reminded of this a few years back when a new student asked me half way through our first lesson on Abraham if we were talking about the president or some other guy. While I was impressed that this first grader knew that an Abraham was a president, I was also reminded to never assume anything when teaching.

Below are a few favorite resources for teaching about Abraham. You can also check out my Pinterest board for even more ideas.

Free Bible Images is an excellent resource for pictures to use during the telling of the lesson. They’ve got a whole section of Abraham images here. The images come in groups by lesson and can be downloaded as PDFs, JPGs, or in a PowerPoint or Keynote file format. After you download them you can delete or rearrange the slides as you’d like. The new story view means you don’t even have to download the files –  you can show the images right from the website. In my experience, the pictures they have match up very well with the lesson I’m telling.

God's Promise to Abraham

Hands On Bible Teacher is one of the first blogs I followed when I started to look for new ideas for my Christ Light lessons. I’d love to go to her Sunday School class! She’s got lots of different Abraham ideas here. I wish her ideas were offered as downloads, but with a little work they’re not too tricky to replicate. I think I’d start with this project reinforcing God’s promises to Abraham.

I use Teachers Pay Teachers products in my classroom all the time, but I never thought I’d find anything for Christ Light ideas. Turns out I was wrong. This packet from A Teachable Year has a wide variety printables aimed at 1st and 2nd graders. At $3 for a 58 page packet it’s a good deal!

The Crafty Classroom has a great post on Abraham. This homeschooling mom links to resources she uses as well as ones she has made. For Abraham there is a link to a file folder review game that would make a great center/free-time activity or take home review. My favorite part (beside it being free!) is that there are cards to make your own questions so it can be tailored to the focus of your lesson and to your students.

God's Story: AbrahamCrossroads Kids’ Club had a short, informal, funny video outlining how God kept his promises to Abraham. I like resources from Crossroads Kids’ Club because they focus on God’s Story throughout the Bible in kid-friendly language and a little bit of humor. There’s also a video of kids telling the lesson in their own words. You might take this concept and make a video with your own students. Older students could make a video to be used in the younger grade classrooms or at Sunday School. Videos could also be shared on social media as an outreach tool or with the congregation as a fun way for them to get to know the students at their school.

For older students, you might consider using Canva, PicMonkey, or other image software to create a timeline or infographic of Abraham’s life. Some examples can be found in the NIV Quickview Bible, available for purchase at Amazon and other retailers. You might consider using their final creations on your school or church’s social media or in other church and school publications.

Blessings as you teach His little lambs about Abraham!

Please Note: The resources listed here and on my Pinterest boards are not always 100% Biblically accurate. I make every effort to list those that require little to no modifying to be usable and trust that you will use your judgement when utilizing these resources.

Rachel is a first and second grade teacher at Bethany Lutheran in Kenosha, WI. Her favorite part of the day is telling her students how much Jesus loves them. Her second favorite part is playing with technology. She's excited to share how she combines the two!
