Sing a New Song “Cornerstone” by Hillsong performed by HeartSong of Cedarville University
Today’s Sing a New Song is Cornerstone by Hillsong United which came out in 2012. This song is a remake of the hymn My Hope is Built On Nothing Less written by Edward Mote in 1837. Hillsong does a good job in reworking the original hymn tune without losing its overall integrity. The lyrics are solid and focus on Christ, his person, his work, his righteousness, his love, and his return. Hillsong’s added refrain complements the original lyrics and further gives praise to Jesus. Cornerstone is also very singable for congregations. Scriptural references include Psalm 118:21-23, Mark 12:10, Isaiah 4:6, Isaiah 25:4, Isaiah 28:16, Matthew 21:41-43, Acts 4:11, Ephesians 2:20, Mark 4:39, 1 Corinthians 15:52, and 1 Peter 2:6-7.
This modern take on an already most powerful hymn found its current inspiration from the 2011 shooting massacre in Norway. In a 2012 interview about the hymn and Hillsong’s new album, Hannah Goodwyn, one of the writers explained the story behind Cornerstone.
We wrote [Cornerstone], and basically because that hymn that says “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” That just felt like the right thing to be singing. The new chorus that, ‘Christ alone, Cornerstone, weak made strong, in the Savior’s love,’ to me that’s just when everything is shaken and nothing seems to make sense, we really need to just be building our lives and putting our faith and our trust in the Cornerstone, the Foundation and it’s Jesus. To me, there’s nothing else you want to be singing in a time like that and projecting that Christ is the foundation even when everything looks uncertain.”
Cornerstone: Lyrics
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus name
Christ alone; the cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Savior’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
Lord of all
When Darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil
Christ alone; the cornerstone
Weak made strong; in the Savior’s love
Through the storm, He is Lord
