A God Kind of Love a poem by Adam Nitz

1Jn4_10

As we finish up this month of “love,” I thought it would be appropriate to explore the radical nature of God’s love for us– a love that bursts all human definitions of the word “love.” God’s love is for those who deserve the opposite. It is an active, relentless, self-sacrificing love that did and does exactly what we need when we deserve it least. Here are some images of that kind of love pulled from various pictures in scripture and put into poetry:

O Lord, I am undeserving of a drop of water
To cool my tongue
But you have given me the Spring!
I dare not bleat for a withered blade of grass
But you have led me to lush pastures!

You smiled a brilliant smile at me—
Purely from your goodness, a marvelous mystery
Though I was a face full frowning
Drowning in my selfish misery.

When I was still full of hate and spitting in your face
Your grace reached out—embraced me
Your nail-marked hands covered over me
And red with your love that bled for me
You suffered my sentence entirely
Shielded me from a well-earned eternity
Of endless, bitter misery

I was dead and icy
And my stone-cold heart leapt alive
At his tender touch!

When I was sunk deep in utter darkness
Eyes dead black and useless, staring uncaring and lightless
Lost; consumed by self and thoughtless
Your Son rose victorious, my death dead in his tomb
Brilliant love split through my gloom.
His new day dawned glorious
My blind eyes filled with beauty and color
And I saw heaven open its wonder
As your word pierced through my blackness
And promised me the unfading light of your presence.

My name is Adam Nitz. I was trained as a Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) Pastor and was privileged to serve a congregation in Michigan for three years. After much wrestling in prayer and evaluating personal and family considerations I resigned my call. Part of the new direction my life has taken includes creative writing. I’ve always loved to write. Growing up I filled notebooks with poetry and reflections on life, faith, people and God. I just recently published a novel. I took a real person mentioned briefly in the Bible and imagined what his life's journey may have been like. If you’d like to follow my journey as an author feel free to check out my other blog at www.adamnitz.com. Please check out my book: I Was There When the Giant Fell at www.createspace.com/4761654 or search the title on Amazon.com. I pray that God will use all these writings to bring more people into closer contact with his saving truth--his mighty Word and that hearts and lives are changed by God’s boundless message of grace.
