How Great Thou Art a New Bread for Beggars Blog Category
Greetings from Pastor Michael Zarling!
I have been invited to write a regular series of blogs on the broad topic of Christian art. I solicited names for the blog on Facebook. There were some great names that were suggested: Brush and Pen – Now and Then; Treasures Old and New; Sermons without Words. And, of course, there were some other suggestions that weren’t so great like Art Schmart and They Got Paid How Much to Do That.
I settled on the title How Great Thou Art. It conveys both the beauty of art and the majesty of God.
I have been involved in art since I was a child. My daughters and I still like looking through my drawing journals – many of which I filled up during boring lectures in school.
There is a renewed interest in art in my congregation at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Racine, WI. We are blessed to have 12 stained glass windows within our church building. We now also have 5 sets of interchangeable paintings for various seasons of the church year. Our artist, Melanie Schuette, has created these unique paintings to look like stained glass windows. Melanie is also the artist who created the triptych for the Chapel of the Christ at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN.

My plan is to introduce you to some of the artwork of Melanie and other contemporary Christian artists (especially those in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod), as well as familiarize you with European triptychs and Eastern Orthodox icons and many other forms of art, both old and new.
For the first 8 years of my ministry, I served at Faith Lutheran Church, an exploratory congregation in Radcliff, KY. I presently serve at Epiphany Lutheran Church and Wisconsin Lutheran School (WLS) in Racine, WI. I am also very involved with our youth as the WLS head soccer coach and the head counselor for WELS Training Camp, a youth camp for 3rd – 9th graders.
I have been married to Shelley for 20 years. Together we have 4 beautiful daughters – Abigail, Miriam, Lydia and Gabrielle. We also have 2 dogs – Messi and Mia – named after Lionel Messi and Mia Hamm (the Zarling family really likes soccer!)
We also really enjoy taking family vacations together to Walt Disney World, hiking in Utah and South Dakota, basketball and soccer tournaments. But we also like stay-cations where we can enjoy each others company at home, watching movies or goofing around in our backyard.
We are going to learn a great deal together as we focus on our God and the talented artists who attempt to represent his majesty in their art. We will see just How Great Thou Art.
