Born a prisoner, born in death, fighting God with every breath
My original humanity so destroyed it could not see
Not just sick, not just weak, no small spark to help me seek
Just a gaping God-sized hole in my broken, empty soul
This is how we are at birth, every human on this earth!
But for grace, but for grace, when our God reveals his face
Not in anger as he should, but our healing and our good
When he breathes his mighty word, it is read or it is heard
And the Spirit works his wonders, angel armies cheering thunders
When a single dead, lost creature, comes alive, a new believer
Sees his God upon a cross, dying there for all of us
Taking all our death and sin, giving us true life again.
Heaven promised, heaven won, joys forever now begun…
But still I live on fallen earth, still so sick by sinful birth
And the joys I ought to know, seem so distant here below

Tempting trails that lead away, from the soul’s true hope and stay
Inner voices great and small contradict our Shepherd’s call
A roaring Lion prowls around, wants to crush us to the ground
I sell myself in chains to sin, forget the good God did within
What I want to do, I do not do and what I hate to do, I do!
There’s nothing good at all in me, in the sinful self that clings to me
I feel my sin so heavy, hard, like chains, a prisoner under guard
But chains fall far when God points up at each star
And reminds me who I am—a child of Abraham
And God’s promise gives me light, gentle peace in dark of night
And he moves me to confess all my hopeless, helpless mess
For my God has set me free, nailed all my darkness to his tree
Went through hell itself for me and all humanity
All the punishments are paid, all my sin on him was laid
Fully free I have his victory, so now I fight my sin with all of me
And this bag of dust and ash receives the only hope that lasts
Shaken free from my past, I trust the One who holds me fast
And leap into my future, into black and unknown ways
With my heart washed clean and my lips exploding praise!
