Nothing But the Blood performed by Andy Cherry
Nothing But the Blood: Why isn’t it well-known?
The words of the song Nothing But the Blood were written by Robert Lowry in 1876. The lyrics resound the eternal truth that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22) The lyrics also help explain the words of the Prophet Isaiah, who spoke of one, whose blood would pay the ultimate price for sin, when he wrote, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
For some reason the hymn Nothing But the Blood has not become one of Christianity’s most beloved anthems. I, a Lutheran pastor, who loves classic hymns, had never even heard the song until a couple of months ago. I wonder if perhaps the prevailing blood language may be part of the reason? If anyone has any thoughts on usage or reasons for non-usage of this hymn your feedback would be appreciated. Please share you thoughts in the comments section below.
Nothing But the Blood: Lyrics
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Refrain:
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

As I was looking for songs for Lent/Easter songs to sing with my children’s group. I came across this song which is a quite popular song on children’s cds. I found this explanation in a sermon from a LCMS pastor “for all the Gospel comfort it extols, the text fails to concretely locate the forgiveness of sins.” which he gives is the reason for it’s absence in The Lutheran Service Book.
